Installation Efficiency

Besides their appearances, the first difference you may notice between helical and push piers is their installation method. Both types of piers rely on handheld devices during their installations, but a helical pier’s installation is much faster. Since helical pier manufacturers and engineers finalize the length and number of helices before their installation, all the installers must do is twist them into place with their hydraulic motor. This quickens the installation time and reduces installation costs.

Push piers, on the other hand, require a hydraulic ram for their installation. The installation crew pushes sections of hollow piping into the earth until they reach solid ground. Because push piers come in sections, the installers can keep adding to the pier until the laws of physics hold them in place and allow them to become a stable support for a medium to large-sized structure. This installation process is not as efficient as simply screwing in the helical pier.


While push piers can only function when the installation crew pushes them straight into the ground below, helical piers work both as a straight pier into the stable ground beneath the surface and as a diagonal tieback for bowing structures. This is because push piers are sections of pipe rather than a whole pier and won’t function properly without the full resistance mass of the structure above.

If you need to relocate the support due to an addition or removal of the structure above, you can. You cannot relocate push piers once you’ve installed them—you can only add more push piers.
